the gui made famous by the early '80s mac and eventually market-dominant windows is not all that difficult to replicate in a generic way. for instance a web-service that handled icon functions and mouse location clicks could easily transfer the location of the os kernel from a fat-client or mid-client model to that of a thin-client. in fact, some of the middleware products that build an application that works with a server could just easily model an application operating system in just the same way where the graphical component is a downloadable library and is actually a second-hand feature to the hard-core operating system functions. i am thinking of a search engine technique that uses data submissions as well as data retrieval and also user ratings. if ever that balls back on my incongruence i might just build a local database model and let it stand in the cold
